This module contains all of the updated OSHA requirements that provide methods for protecting workers against cave-ins. It also describes other safety practices that should be employed when working around trenches and excavations.

Polyethylene Pipe Fusion
The Polyethylene Pipe Fusion module specifically focuses the participant’s attention on fusing together PE pipe. Also discussed in the module is the fusion machine, the fusion process, and safety precautions as well as a demonstration on proper fusion procedures. The module also has an Instructor Guide and contains 4 classroom and hands-on activities that include discussion like safety hazards and maintenance procedures for the pipe fusion machine.

Pressure Pipelaying Techniques
The Pressure Pipelaying Technique module discusses the basics of pressure pipelaying techniques, how to test the pipe systems, how to repair them and how to do it safely as part of a crew. Participants will be given an introduction to Pressure Pipe Systems and practice techniques associated with installing pressure pipe. The module also has an Instructor Guide and contains 6 classroom and hands-on activities highlighting the different roles on a pipe crew.

Tapping Water Mains
The Tapping Water Mains module discusses how to use the Mueller B-101 Tapping Machine to drill and tap a Ductile Iron water main. Hands-on activities will allow participants to practice setting up, using and maintaining the machine. The module also has an Instructor Guide and contains 8 classroom and hands-on activities that highlight tasks including procedures for direct tapping and the assembling of a water service connection.

Trench and Excavation Safety
The Trench and Excavation Safety participants will focus on standards for building protective systems in trenches and excavations. Participants will also discuss how to install different kinds of protective systems to protect themselves and others in the event that trenches or excavations cave in. The module also has an Instructor Guide and contains 7 classroom and hands-on activities that highlight OSHA standards for Trench and Excavation Safety.

Utility Locating Programs
The Utility Locating Programs introduces participants to how to dig safely when excavating around underground electrical lines, communications systems, water supplies and gas lines. Participants will also discuss protocols for locating and marking underground utilities that will prevent accidents and unnecessary damage. The module also has an Instructor Guide and contains 3 exercises that ensure that the participants are prepared to “dig safe.”
